Getting There

Thanks for visiting and we are so excited you are considering joining us for a great time in Ireland. We have provided some information to get you started as you plan your itinerary.
  • Shannon Airport (SNN) is located 15 minutes away from Dromoland Castle.
  • Aer Lingus has daily flights to Shannon from Boston Logan Airport (BOS) and New York (JFK) Airport.
  • You may also choose to fly into Dublin (DUB) Airport and drive 2 to 2.5 hours to Dromoland Castle.
  • United Express flies from Miami International (MIA) Airport to Chicago's O'Hare International (ORD) Airport and Aer Lingus flies from (ORD) to Dublin (DUB).
  • Aer Lingus flies non-stop from Orlando International (MCO) to Dublin (DUB).
  • If you are interested in expanding your visit to Europe beyond Ireland, you can look into Ryanair flights to other locations in Europe.
  • Flights purchased early enough can start at approximately $650 per person from Boston (BOS) or New York (JFK) to Shannon.
  • Observations over the last year indicate that the best deals seem to be from AerLingus.com 2 to 6 months out from flight date.
The above information is not comprehensive but certainly useful. Happy planning! We have made this trip before. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns at CastleandCake@gmail.com

Travel Tip - Ways to Save

Just to be clear, this is a not an advertisement and we are not receiving any compensation for this info.  We used some tips (see thepointsguy.com) that have saved us a good amount of money on our flights and we wanted to share it with you. There is this card, the Chase British Airways Visa. You can sign up and get 50,000 Avios (their version of miles or points) if you spend a certain amount within 3 months. Even if you don't meet this amount in 3 months, you still earn Avios/points for your purchases. 25,000 Avios/points gets you a round trip coach ticket from Boston to Shannon for about $140 in taxes and fees. The trick is to fly Aer Lingus instead of British Airways (the British Airways taxes/fees/fuel surcharges make the points less beneficial). You would book the Aer Lingus flight via British Airways. It takes about 15 minutes on the phone with a British Airways customer service agent to book the tickets but it is worth the savings. If the customer service representative states there is a fee for booking over the phone, you may want to politely state that the website was unable to process your request and they may waive the fee. If you have any questions about the process, please contact us. Jess and I traveled to Ireland using this method in early 2015.

British Airways Customer Service: (800) 247-9297

Another option would be the Capitol One Venture Card that has a similar offer and can reduce the price of a round trip plane ticket by about $400...and they have an app for that.

The American Express Premium Gold Card also has a 25,000 point offer (at the time of this post). The AMEX card’s points are transferable on a 1:1 basis to Avios and you can earn them faster when you use it for gas and groceries (2x  vs 1.25 with British Airways Visa).

**As with most airline points reward tickets, there are only so many seats per flight that are offered, get them while they are hot or try another day.

Passport Required

-  Get your passport!  Adults and even children will require a passport to get to Ireland.  The process can take several weeks so don't delay. Visit the following website to get started:

  1. Aer Lingus has flights from JFK to SNN (Shannon airport - 15 minutes away from Dromoland) for just under $600, departing the 12th of May and returning on the 19th. Boston flights are $40 more for the same itinerary.
